Adanthera pavonina - Jumbie Bead Tree - (Legume Family - Leguminosae) is a tree imported to PR from tropical Asia.  By now it is locally naturalized and also planted as ornamental tree. The tree depicted below is growing right next to the tower of the administrative building of the University of Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras. The tree is a very typical legume type of tree with bipinnate leaves and smooth grayish bark. The easiest way to find this tree is to look to the floor and find the red lentil-shaped seeds. That way I found many trees planted in the Cambalache forest near Arecibo. These seeds were in ancient times used as weights because each is very similar to each other. They are also used in jewelry.
